What is Ozone?

Ozone is Mother Nature's perfect purifier. Ozone is produced by lightning (that "fresh air smell" after a lightning storm) and other processes. Ozone purifies our environment naturally.

Ozone is a pale blue unstable gas that is very active and has a characteristic penetrating scent, readily detectable at concentrations as low as 0.01 to 0.05 ppm. It is an unstable molecule consisting of three atoms of oxygen whereas a "normal" oxygen molecule has only two atoms of oxygen. Because the molecule is so unstable, it quickly breaks off its extra oxygen atom. This lone oxygen atom goes in search of another atom with which to bond. If it finds another oxygen atom, it will form a new molecule of oxygen. But, if it finds a carbon or sulfur molecule, it will break into that molecule destroying it in the process. Since all pollutants described are carbon, Ozone is the answer.

Pure Ozone should not be confused with smog. Pure Ozone is produced by lightening or by ultraviolet radiation. Smog is low level or surface Ozone. It is formed when volatile organic compounds (emissions from motor vehicles and power plant emissions, landfills and solvents) chemically react in the presents of sunlight and heat. It is smelly, obnoxious and unhealthy. The Ozone smog, commonly referred to as Ozone by weathermen and the news media, is actually polluted Ozone. Smog is to Pure Ozone as polluted water is to pure water. Click Here for more detailed information about Ozone
